The early Christian Church, at the end of the fourth century, began burning all materials that did not correspond with Christian ideology, the Gnostic writings, and this is evident, when Athanasius, the bishop of Alexandria, in 367 AD, urge Christians to "cleanse the church from every defilement" and to reject "the hidden books."
The authorities of Nazi Germany, in May 1933, began to ceremonially burn all books in Germany that did not correspond with Nazi ideology.
