I had seen once, a most charming New Orleans or Louisiana custom - folk art - of making a box , and putting scenes from your life around the sides. Inside you painted things of your heart. I wonder if someone can give me the name of these boxes. They had a name. Also can you tell me more about the charming tradition and custom? Have you ever seen or done one of these boxes? Thank you!

Actually I do Know what you are talking about and it first came into use in the Middle Ages.
They used paint these boxes initially as a Dowry for the daughters and went with her to new groom.
Many Countries had adopted the use of these boxes but at the time they were much bigger like a trunk.
They used these around the world up until the middle of the 1950's in most parts of Europe and here.
Linens and other things that the young lady had sewn were in the Dowry.
In Louisiana and New Orleans I can not recall what the name they have for them are. They are much smaller and very charming.

go to the mall, they always have engraving stands. if not, look in the phonebook for a jewlry store and call them and ask them about it.

does anyone know the name of a charm that say"the lord watch between me and thee,while we are apart one from the other" it is ususally in a heart shape that gets broken in half and each person wears one on the halfs and when together it become whole again...i thougth it was called a mitpah..but i guess not ... would appreciae any and all help;;;thanks in advance!!!! sincerely..donna
