Who Is Patron Saint Against Witchcraft?
St Catherine of Alexandria

Columba of Rieti:

Legend says that at her birth, angels gathered around her house to sing. During her Baptism a dove suddenly flew down to the font. From that point on, no one used her by her given name (Angelella = little angel), but called her Columba (= dove). Raised in a poor but pious family; her parents gave away nearly everything thing they had to people even poorer than themselves. As a small girl she learned to spin and sew; she and her mother repaired the clothes of the local Dominicans. Educated by Dominican nuns. Had a early, strong devotion to Saint Catherine of Siena and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. While still in her teens she prayed about her vocation in life, she received a vision of Christ on a throne surrounded by saints. She took this as instruction to dedicate herself to got, so she cut herself off from the world, made a private vow of chastity, and spent her time in prayer. Unbeknownst to Columba, her parents had arranged a marriage for her and she she said no

Saint Catherine of Siena?

What do these icons mean? What is she the patron saint of? Thanks, I tried hard but don't understand. God bless ^^

I have never seen the boat icon with this saint before. Usually she is depicted with a book (as a doctor of the church), or with a lily, a marriage ring, or crown of thorns. (Actually, I like this boat icon very much, it's particularly beautiful! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.)

I think the boat image may be from a vision she had, shortly before the end of her life. She had been advisor to popes during a particularly troubled and divided period of church history. Eventually she had a vision in which she felt herself crushed beneath the great ship which was the church.

The other icon, showing her holding a church building, most likely refers to her efforts to support the church's unity during this difficult era in its history. She persuaded the papacy to return to Rome from Avignon, and then supported the pope in Rome when a rival tried to set up back in Avignon.

She is the patron saint of nurses, because of her work as a nurse, caring for people with leprosy and advanced cancers. She was only the second woman to be named a doctor of the church (in 1970) because of her influential letters and her four-part "Dialogues". (Oddly enough, all of her writings were dictated to scribes, because she couldn't write!)
