I need to know why and some background info on him. I do know, however, that he is one of the evangelists. But why is he the patron Saint of Venice?
By the way, it's a beautiful place to visit, if you've never been you really should go! The Basilica de San Marco and the Doge's Palace are fabulous.
In the Ninth Century, according to legend, two or three ambitious Chamber of Commerce types from Venice stole the remains of St. Mark the Apostle from his tomb in Alexandria, Egypt. William Lithgow tells the story in his "Comments on Italy" from The Rare Adventures and Painfull Peregrinations, published in 1614 and quoted in Ian Littlewood's Venice: A Literary Companion:
They placed the corpse in a large basket covered with herbs and swine's flesh which the Musselmans [Muslims] hold in horror, and the bearers were directed to cry Khwazir (pork), to all who should ask questions or approach to search. In this manner they reached the vessel. The body was enveloped in the sails, and suspended to the mainmast till the moment of departure, for it was necessary to conceal this precious booty from those who might come to clear the vessel in the roads. At last the Venetians quitted the shore full of joy. They were hardly in the open sea when a great storm arose. We are assured that S. Mark then appeared to the captain and warned him to strike all his sails immediately, lest the ship, driven before the wind, should be wrecked upon hidden rocks. They owned their safety to this miracle.
After crossing the Mediterranean and cruising up the Adriatic, the graverobbers reached Venice and handed their cargo over to the Doge. The local religious and civic authorities quickly elected St. Mark as Venice's patron saint, and the apostle's traditional symbol--a winged lion--became the logo of the Venetian Republic.

Yeah, I'm doing a report for my 8th grade heritage report. My Mom is from Lazio [Rome], Italy and my Dad is from Lercara Friddi [Palermo], Sicily. I was wondering who the patron saints of these regions were. I looked on the web and found San Rosalia patron saint of Palermo and for Lazio I found two. San Sebastiano and San Bernardo. I just want to make sure I get the right ones.

Saint Rosalia
Saint Rosalia, also known as La Santuzza (the little saint), is the patron saint of Palermo, Sicily, (Italy). According to the legend Rosalia was born in 1130, at Palermo of a noble family. When she was still very young her heart turned from earthly vanities to God. She forgot about all her wealth and beauty and lived her life in devotion to God and prayer. Soon after when Rosalia was grown, she moved to a cave near her parent's home, and lived in it the rest of her life; tradition says that she was led to the cave by two angels On the cave wall she wrote "I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses, and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ." Rosalia remained apart from the world, dedicated to prayer and works of penance for the sake of Jesus, and died alone. In 1625,during a period of plague, which is a highly infectious, usually fatal epidemic disease, she appeared in a vision to a hunter near her cave. In the hunters vision she indicated where her remains were to be found. She ordered him to bring her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city.
The hunter climbed the mountain and found her bones in the cave as described. He did what she had asked and after the procession, her relics were paraded through the street. Three days later the plague ended, intercession to Rosalia was credited with saving the city, and she was proclaimed its patroness. The traditional celebration of Rosalia lasted for days, involved fireworks and parades, and her feast day was made a holy day of obligation by Pope Pius XI in 1927. In conclusion I chose this Saint because she shows me that god and prayer are more important then anything else in your life and I also think Saint Rosalia is a wonderful person, saved Palermo from the horrible plague and her cave is now a memorial for the people of Sicily, her feast day is September 4th
Why don't you add a line about what you can do to be more like her.
