Like, Michael, the archangel, is the patron saint for soliders because he is known to fight Satan. He is the guard of the Kingdom.

But as for Dymphna, patron saint of people with mental illnesses, I was wondering how the Church comes to the decision of what a saint will help us with? Anyone know? Thanks!
yeah, I know there is a reason but some saints did a lot in their lifetime and I'm wondering how the Church decides on it.

Some saints are recognized as patron saints of certain peoples, places, things, and occupations due to circumstances surrounding their lives.

For example:

People: Saint Peter was a fisherman before he became a fisher of men and is the patron saint of fishermen (and popes).

Place: Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland and is the patron saint of Ireland.

Things: Saint Claire was near death and was unable to attend Mass, she turned in the direction of the Chapel. The wall between her and Chapel vanished and she was able to both view the Mass and participate. For this reason, she is the patroness of TV.

Occupation: Saint Matthew the Apostle was a tax collector and is the patron of accountants, bankers, bookkeepers, and, yes, tax collectors .

I am italian, so If Italians have a special way of picking a patron saint, please tell me. Other than that, are there any rules or guidelines to picking your patron saint? I was kinda drawn to Saint Lucy or Saint Michael. No Apparent Reason for being attracted them, I just like them.

Francis de Sales was a writer and so he is patron of journalists and writers. Clare of Assisi was named patron of television. The saints for the abandoned children are St. Ivo of Kermartin and St. Jerome Emiliani. For protection against abortion there is St. Catherine of Sweden. For abuse victims there is St. Adelaide, St. Agostina Pietrantoni, St. Fabiola, St. Germanize Cousin, St. Godelieve, St. Jeanne de Lestonnac, St. Jeanne Marie de Maille, St. John Baptist de la Salle, St. Laura Vicuna, and St. Margaret the Barefooted. If you’ve been falsely accused, pray to St. Raymond Nonnatus; against insects, St. Dominic of Silos; against jealousy, St. Elizabeth of Portugal; against moles, St. Ulric; against the devil, St. Dionysius the Aeropagite. And the list goes on…

i love music, and giving to people. i protect anyone i can in any way i can. i was going to use the arc angel saint michael, but it is a guy name. HELP

I am not much for RC beliefs, but I think if you read the Bible, you will find that the women that were around Jesus and His Disciples not only heard Him, they also supported Him and His work...so, keeping that in mind, Mary from Magdala, or, Mary Magdalene...I cannot recall where I read this, but it was/is believed she was in fact a business owner and had some personal wealth-which she freely gave to the Lord.

My 17 yr old step-son is having a hard time with life right now. Nothing too serious at this point but something that needs addressed before it gets out of hand. It's the usual teenage things - life, what's next after H.S. graduation, those types of things.

I'd like to buy him a Patron Saint Medal to wear to help guide him through these times, but I don't know which Saint would be correct. St. Michael? St. Christopher?

St. Aloysius Gonzaga: Is protector and patron of youth, especially of young Catholic students. Is invoked against soreness of eyes and pestilence.

St. Ambrose : Is the patron of those who are Learning (Students).

St. Michael the Archangel: Is patron of grocers, and the guardian of all mountain places. He is the special guardian of the Pope, and of the Blessed Sacrament.

St. Raphael the Archangel: Is invoked in need of healing. Is patron of travelers, and of the young and innocent, and of decision making (Good Judgment).
