St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is specifically for the US Navy. St. Brendan the Navigator, St. Erasmus (Elmo), St. Anthony of Padua, St. Barbara, St. Michael the Archangel. There are more, lots more.

St. Erasmus (St. Elmo) is the patron saint of sailors in Catholicism. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus was a Dutch proto-reformer, but he was a Catholic Priest as well.

The ship in the book was Dutch Protestant, at war with the Spanish Catholics who were trying to colonize the Netherlands.

The ship was most likely named from which one?


It could be either, but because the ship was Dutch, I would guess it was named after the Dutch humanist, who died in 1536, about 64 years before the events of "Shogun. " However, St. Elmo's association with sailors makes that connection very possible, also.
