My friend is Irish and catholic and very proud to be both, and he's about to go to Iraq, so I was thinking about sending him a charm or something. Maybe something to symbolize luck or life or protection. It has to be small so that he can take it with him. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did ya call poison control before your lawyer?
Yes, I know that Catholic priests tend to do their confessions to other Catholic priests. But hypothetically, say the priest decided to do the confession to himself or that there was a war and there were no other priests available, can he forgive himself?
Please no cracks with references to the prominent pedophilia cases, for answers. You're not amusing,or very charming or, very witty for coming up with those obvious jests.
<<Can a Catholic priest forgive himself?>>
No. Oral confession to a clergyman is essential to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, even for other clergymen.

If, due to circumstances beyond the priest's control, he winds up in a situation where he is the only clergyman around, he can't do his own Confession. God is a merciful God, and will take that into consideration if the priest should, say, die before getting the opportunity to receive the Sacrament.
My friend had this necklace which had that black shiny (Nylon?) "string", and the charm was shaped kinda like a rhombus, it was bronze/gold colored, and it was I'd say about 8-10 little crosses that overlapped each other. The best way I can describe it is that it kind of resembled the pattern of Chex cereal, except that it was really the crosses making this pattern. I myself am not Catholic and don't know much about it's symbolisms or anything really, but I was wondering if there was perchance a name for this pattern? See, my friend lost this necklace and it was very important to him, and I'd like to try and see about getting another one for him, but seeing as I don't know what to call it, I don't know what to ask around for.
It might be a Jerusalem Cross, but that has only five crosses; one large cross, and four small (one in each corner).

Cardinal Levada Denounces NY Times Media Attacks on Pope ...
ROME (CNA/EWTN News) - In a statement released on the Vatican website , Cardinal William J. Levada charged that the recent media attacks on the Holy Father by the New York Times concerning sex abuse within the Church are "deficient by any reasonable standards of fairness" that American readers have come to expect from major media outlets.
Cardinal Levada, who is the current prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), began his remarks by addressing a recent New York Times article by senior columnist Laurie Goodstein which leveled charges against the Vatican's handling of a Milwaukee sex abuse case. The prelate also took issue with an accompanying editorial which echoed Goodstein's perspective.
"I am not proud of America's newspaper of record, the New York Times," Cardinal Levada wrote."Both the article and the editorial are deficient by any reasonable standards of fairness that Americans have every right and expectation to find in their major media reporting," stressed the cardinal, who then discussed what he found to be most troubling in Goodstein's March 24 article.

Dutch Catholics have re-branded the Lent fast as the "Christian Ramadan" in an attempt to appeal to young people who are more likely to know about Islam than Christianity.
The Catholic charity Vastenaktie, which collects for the Third World across the Netherlands during the Lent period, is concerned that the Christian festival has become less important for the Dutch over the last generation.
