Is The Cross Christian ?

When did the transition from Crucifix to cross happen in Christianity?
Cross barbed wire (1)

I understand the beliefs as to why Protestants and Catholics use a cross or Crucifix. Just wondering when the change took place in history.
In history when did Christians change from the crucifix (Christ on the cross) to the cross alone. Was it with Martin Luther?
When I am referring to Crucifix I meant with Jesus on the cross. When I said cross I meant the cross alone without Jesus. Sorry for the confusion.

Crucifix is a Latin form of the word crucifīxus; cross is a derived English word with the exact same meaning. From the beginning, each language had its own word for "crucifixus".

What tattoo should I get for Christianity that isnt a cross?
Young woman in Debre Berhan Selassie church. Gondar, Ethiopia

I dont want a triquerette either. In Texas how old do you have to be to get a tattoo? im 17

first - the fish DOES NOT represent Jesus. The fish is used to represent the christian him/herself. Back when christians were persecuted and killed on site (shortly after Jesus left) people who followed Jesus' teachings needed a way to recognize one another. Because Jesus called his disciples Fishers of Men, it was standard practice for a christian who suspected the person they were talking to was also christian to draw the fish symbol in the dirt with their foot. If the other party was christian, they would in turn draw the symbol. THe word Jesus in the fish (regardless of the language it's written in) was palced just recently in history to show dedication to Jesus as a response to anti-christian parties mocking christians by using the fish symbol in other ways.

There are few "symbols" used to represent Christ through history. The most common are the lion (of Judah) and the lamb (of God - the sacrifice.)

Tattoos are very personal. Religion is very personal. Your walk with God is very personal. DO NOT GET A TATTOO UNTIL YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN OF WHAT YOU WANT, AND MAKE IT PERSONAL. Feel free to use other photos and ink as inspiration, but I HIGHLY recommend making it your own personal symbol. You can always find a good artist and sit and talk to them about what religion and christianity mean to you and they may be able to help you find the perfect representation.

Having said that, many people choose to have scripture, common Bible story scenes and various other memorable scriptural moments tattooed. Bottom line is, do what represents your walk; for example, I have a sun in the middle of my upper back with my wife's and kids' names encircling it. This tattoo has two meanings: my wife and kids are the light of my life and my family's very existence is due to and revolves around the Son.

I received a beautiful cross necklace from my grandparents on my confirmation. And my oldest daughter seems to collect them!

Why is christianity represented with the symbol of the cross?
Girl in Debre Berhan Selassie church. Gondar, Ethiopia

I know that some say the cross means the trinity, but in the cruxifiction days it meant death. Why do we kinda honor it and make it this huge symbol?

I have to agree with the first answerer, to remember what Jesus did for us in dying in our legal place.

But I have sometimes reflected on the fact that many Jews, when immigrating to the US at Ellis Island would refuse to make the sign of the cross (an 'x') on their immigration papers if they were too illiterate to write their names. So they began writing a little circle (kykel) instead, which was eventually shortened to the derogatory term 'ki-ke' (One syllable.)

It is so highly ironic, that so many Jews, who would deny the Resurrection, actually wound up signing, in lieu of their names, the symbol of the Empty Tomb!

Another very popular Christian symbol used these days (bringing it back into common use since the first century or so) is the fish symbol, containing the letters IK(TH)YS, standing for Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior. (In Greek, the TH symbol is the single letter theta.)

The fish symbol is sometimes imitated by Darwinists and modified into a fossil fish symbol, or into one fish eating another, suggesting the strugle for survival.

  • Soul of a Christian Triathlete: Easter, Cross, Surprise by Grace

I was broken. My hands were dirty. There's nothing I can do to mend things. And at this point of despair that I looked up and caught the glimpse of the redeeming power of the Cross. It was Jesus who had to died on the Cross. His death, a shameful death, is the only solution for a justly God to deal with our sins. Jesus had to bear the Father's wrath for us so that we can stand right before God.

Jesus dies on the cross | eChurch Christian Blog

    Mark 15:33-41

At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
