i dont mean clothing they wear, or if they carry the holy quran with them, i mean like a christian would sometimes wear a cross around their necks, is there anything like that a muslim wears or anything? hope my question makes sense. Thankyou xx
hi emma were not suppose to wear any jewellry to show off or wear an object that some people think might help them in any way. surely Allah alone is suffient for us but some muslims do wear them.(verses of the quran folded up-thasbi, allah knecklaces, allah rings even some muslim mans wear ear rings but we are not suppose to) emma dont judge islam by the way some muslims act judge on how Allah wants you live your life so you can be successfull in the hereafter. read the quran in english. hope that was helpful
Wearing a cross on a neckleace, for example.
Do you wear it so you are closer to God, or so that you can let other people know your beliefs? What difference does it make to your connection to God and does it make you a better Christian?
Is it wrong for jewellers to profit from Jesus' sacrifice?
morg - fair play
starynight - true, true. do you want to answer the last question?
elfkin - apparently the government cares, thats why certain jewellery gets banned in schools
thecharleslloyd - the point of the question is to try to help me understand human thought processes because I find it interesting. I get out enough mate. What the point in your answer? It doesnt answer anything
Personally, I have a few reasons for wearing a cross. It was given to me on a very important day in my life, by a very special person in my life. It serves as a constant reminder to me of Christ's sacrifice.
It also serves as a reminder to me to behave myself in the way that fits with what I believe. If I know people can look at me and tell at a glance that I claim Christianity, it keeps me a little more conscious about behaving in a way that is in keeping with my belief.
It in no way makes a person a "better Christian" on its own. There's no such thing as a "better Christian." All Christians are sinners, saved by grace, and no amount of jewelry changes that fact. Wearing a small silver cross doesn't make you less of a Christian than wearing an opulent gold and jewel-encrusted cross. It's a physical reminder and sign, but it isn't necessary in any way. Having a necklace does not make someone a Christian; not having one doesn't make a person a non-Christian.
The way I see it, wearing a cross is a little like wearing a wedding ring. Why do you do it? To celebrate your love, to remind yourself of your love, and to announce your status to the people you come in contact with at a glance.
Is it right for jewelers to profit from the Christian belief? Probably not. But it's business, and they know it. They know they have a ready market, and from a business point of view, it would be insane not to cash in on it. It's not just about jewelry, though, there's all kinds of Christian or faith-based merchandise. It's not just Christian (though the majority of it is). It's not uncommon to find Jewish people wearing a gold Star of David around their neck. The difference, of course, is that in the US and many other English-speaking countries, Christians are in the majority, so you will see probably 50 cross necklaces for every one Star of David necklace.
Lots of girls are wearing necklaces with the design of a circle with a sort of tower in it with a cross on top! I really like it but don't know what the make is. I'm probably being really stupid cos everyone seems to have it and its driving me mad!! Please help!!
I have a photo if it would help!
Don't worry about it and i haven't seen what u are talking about so it shouldn't be such a big deal!
Okay I was at the Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida and they had an exhibit of Native American art, I think this was part had Seminole jewellry/metal art and there was this piece that had an swastika in the center IIRC and I knew swastikas among the Native Americans didn't have anything to do with the Nazis but then I saw carved (or molded?) around the swastika were little iron crosses. And I was like that's weird! But I tried to explain it away in my head as a symbol of Christianity introduced to the Native Americans by the Europeans in the 1500s, 1600s, etc. But it was weird because the Iron Cross was also used by the Nazis so can anyone explain why the Iron Cross was used in that art.
I am NOT confusing the swastika and the Iron Cross. The metal artwork had both.
this is what I'm talking about when I say Iron Cross:

You're thinking of swastika, not the iron cross (Iron Cross was a different military symbol for the Nazi party). Yeah, it was a symbol of many cultures before Hitler. Check out the mosaic tiles in some Italian islands. In many Native American cultures it was a symbol of good luck.
Oh, OK.

If there was one very recognizable piece of jewelry, it would have to be cross pendants. For many centuries, people have been showcasing this design and theme as a way to signify their faith or like today, as a simple fashion accessory.
How Cross Pendants Came Up
It might not be possible to find the exact dates on when these were first used, but somehow it can be traced back to around 1000-1400 AD. This was the time when these gold Christian pendants first came to be used.
During the middle ages, there was a special demand for these pendants since the costumes were often simple. The pendants contrasted the clothes and pretty much showed the religious inclination of the wearer.
There were still no earrings during this time, hence, one of the best pieces at that time were rings and necklaces. Most of the time, they also bore great inscriptions that held the faith in even higher esteem.
