The significance is nearly as old as the faith itself -- it is a constant reminder of what Jesus suffered for us. It was also a teaching tool to show converts (who were not literate, or where language barriers existed) in the form of paintings and sculpture -- again, the horrible death Jesus suffered for us. It's also a unifying symbol; a way to recognize a brother or sister in Christ on sight.
"Post Easter" crosses (I am assuming you mean the Risen Christ, or a plain cross) can also be worn, kept in the house, etc -- but it really is the Crucifix that reminds us of His sacrifice.
Actually Priscilla, I read last year something from the Vatican about those Risen Christ crosses, and how they shouldn't be used. It'll be an easy internet search if you are interested.

So i was just wondering if you guys know of anyone,
could even be a celebrity, who wears a cross necklace/earings just because they like it, or its in fashion, and NOT for religious purposes?

There are two types. One without the body of Christ on it and one with. I like the one with. It is called a Crucifix. You can get them at any religious bookstore.
The type of cross you wear can reflect your theology. If you want to remember to become as Christ to all you meet, you might wear a crucifix. If you want to emphasize His Resurrection, you would wear the plain cross. Most, but not all, Protestants wear a plain one. I have both. I wear the crucifix in lent.

I’ve been participating in the Community Cross Walk since we first began holding it 21 years ago. The particular old wooden cross we use was originally the property of the St. Gregory’s congregation – I suppose technically it still is — but since the walk ends at our church, it’s always been stored out-of-the-way in the little-used front entrance of our church.
Every Good Friday for the past 20 years I’ve come over to the church in the morning and loaded the cross into my car. It’s too big for my car, so it would stick out the window, and I’d drive it the 2/3 of mile up the road to St. Gregory’s, where I’d drop it off, then head back home to occupy myself until the 1 p.m. service.
