was actually brutally mauled by a walrus on his way carrying the cross?
And would christians today be thanking Jesus for getting brutally mauled by a walrus for our sins?
The cross is actually a very widely used symbol in ancient spirituality, even before Christianity.

Examples: In the Greek Orthodox Church - "The sign of the Cross is made by joining three fingers (thumb, index finger and middle finger together; putting two fingers (third finger and little down on the palm and lifting the hand first to the forehead, then to the heart, then to the right shoulder, and then the left shoulder." http://www.mliles.com/melkite/signcross. shtml
In the Catholic Church - "At the beginning of Mass the celebrant makes the sign of the cross by placing his left hand extended under his breast; then raising his right to his forehead, which he touches with the extremities of his fingers, he says: In nomine Patris; then, touching his breast with the same hand, he says: et Filii; touching his left and right shoulders, he says; et Spiritus Sancti; and as he joins his hands again adds: Amen.)" http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13785a.h tm
As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.
Insha'allah, it is my understanding the originally everyone used the version as performed in the Eastern Orthodox manner. Then, in medieval Europe, as the uneducated Christians attempted to imitate the priest, they began performing it as Catholics do to this day.
Instead of performing as the Orthodox priest actually does, they performed the motion in a mirror image style of repetition.
Ma'a salaam.
Cross is it what Jesus died on?
Gal. 3:13 KJV Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. For it is written cursed is every man hangeth upon a tree.
Acts 5:30 The god of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
this made me wonder was Jesus really hung on a stake or a cross.
From what I have found out that was from a pagan religon that dated way before Jesus time.
What were the historical origins of Christendom’s cross?
“Various objects, dating from periods long anterior to the Christian era, have been found, marked with crosses of different designs, in almost every part of the old world. India, Syria, Persia and Egypt have all yielded numberless examples . . . The use of the cross as a religious symbol in pre-Christian times and among non-Christian peoples may probably be regarded as almost universal, and in very many cases it was connected with some form of nature worship.”—Encyclopædia Britannica (1946), Vol. 6, p
Do you know of any I have missed?
You already know the answer.
Jesus was executed on an upright stake or pole.
The 'cross' didn't become recognized as a christian symbol until emperor Constantine (a non-christian) used it to rally people to his side to win a war. I think that was about 400 years after Jesus' death.
But, whatever it was, I am fairly certain that the early church didn't wear replicas of it around their necks are hung from their walls.
Oh, various crosses have been in use as religious symbols long before the Romans and others used them to torture people.

BBC - Will amp; Testament: Crossed wires
Christians (and most other religious groups) have always had a persecution complex. They thrive on telling each other what an embattled put-upon minority they are, when in truth of course they're anything but.
This case, along with all the others over the past few years have been nothing but propoganda offensives by the Christian Legal Centre, as any half decent journalist (without an agenda) would know.
Complain about this comment
Do you not think it would be an insult to those who have, and indeed still are facing strong persecution in our World for their religious beliefs, whether Christian or otherwise?
Even thinking of recent violence in Jos, Nigeria where many people lost their lives etc would pale...
Cross does not establish religion (4/5/10)
"I don't see how a lighted cross on Mount Penn has any thing to do with Reading establishing a religion." I think the fact that a particular religious group has been holding services under this cross for many years now kind of puts that statement to rest. If it was just being used as an adornment/easter decoration it's one thing but when a particular religious organization is performing services under that cross it becomes a whole different ballgame. This isn't private property, it's government owned which means it belongs to everyone regardless of their religion.. if a cross is going to be placed there and Christian services are held there then ANY religious group that wants to put their symbol on that tower and hold services there must be permitted. I'd love to see the reaction of everyone...
