I've heard a few times that christianity borrowed the cross as a symbol from previous religion, so what is the first known instance of ANY religion using a cross as its symbol? preferably pre-jesus.

Since Jesus said
in Mr 8:34-38
34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

In the 4th Century, it was Constantine who went to battle using crosses as symbols. He believed that it was the crosses that allowed them to win the battle, and therefore soon declared Christianity to be the religion of the land and instructed Christians to combine all their "letters" into a single book creating the first Christian Bible (NT) which they attached to the Hebrew Bible. In essence, it was Constantine who caused Christians to create an "orthodox" church (the right path). It was not long after that the real atrocities began and people were offered the choice of orthodoxy or death which continued on and off for the next 1600 years.

You are likely thinking of a cross used by one or more of the Orthodox churches. I used to have an image of that particular cross somewhere (many years ago) but I cannot locate it. It was fairly elaborate. There is also a three-bar cross in the Eastern Orthodox Church in which the bottom most cross piece is at an angle. The saltire (a form of a cross) is in the shape of an X.
This is one case where wikipedia hasn't yielded any results. I apologize for not coming up with anything better.

  • ETERNAL FLAME NEWS: UK: Govt Tells Nurse She Can#39;t Wear Cross Necklace

Shirley Chaplin (Christian Legal Centre photo)

A government tribunal in the United Kingdom has ruled that the National Health Service has a right to ban its nurse employees from wearing Christian crosses as a symbol of their faith.

The ruling was reported yesterday by the Christian Legal Centre, which announced Exeter nurse Shirley Chaplin has promised to continue the fight over her necklace.

"The decision shows a worrying lack of common sense," center director Andrea Williams said. "No evidence supported the Trust's 'health and safety' position, yet the tribunal considered removing Mrs. Chaplin's cross as a proportionate response to a 'health and safety' risk that was never established."

WND has reported on similar cases, most notably of Nadia Eweida, 58, from southwest London, who took on British Airways over its banishment of her small cross necklace.

SHIRLEY Chaplin, the Exeter nurse at the centre of the ‘Cross Row’ with her NHS employer, has vowed to “fight on” after an Employment Tribunal found against her claim for discrimination on the grounds of her religion. The Tribunal found that there was no discrimination because all staff were treated equally. No one was permitted to wear a cross around their neck for religious reasons but if someone wanted to wear a hijab for religious reasons they could. The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust indicated that they would permit exemptions in their uniform policy for religious and cultural symbols that were ‘mandatory’ within the religion. It would seem that, without evidence, the Trust decided that the wearing of the hijab was a mandatory Islamic cultural manifestation...
