religious jewellery

Ok, I feel slightly stupid for not knowing this, but is it ok to wear religious symbolism in the workplace? I start a new job in about 3 weeks so I'd prefer to know beforehand. I know I should probably ask my boss, but I didn't want religion to come up in my interview and I don't want any false impressions of me to be developed before I officially start, since I've heard some pretty sad stories of people losing their jobs over wearing religious items.

I wear an Mjollnir pendant (Which just about no one knows the meaning of anyway) And sometimes a Pentacle pendant (Which CAN be mistaken for a symbol of satanism etc) I'm just worried that there might be some members of other religions in the workplace, and if there were, what if they didn't "like" my religious jewellery? If they had a problem with it, would I be obliged to take it off? I could always wear it underneath my shirt I guess, but I'd just like to check that having it on display wouldn't cause any problems, since I'd hate for my religious beliefs to come between my job and the people that work there.

If you value your job high enough that you're willing to utter a little white lie for it, tell your boss "It's an anchor" cause your grandad was a sailor or sth ;)

I always get asked if my Hammer is an anchor. When I just can't be bothered explaining the whole "I'm a polytheist" story (this country is about 70% catholic!!) I just say "Yes, something like that".

It is a traditional custom for Hindu married women to wear a stud or a nose ring. Women pierce their nose either on one side or on both sides. Gold studs embedded with stones of different sizes and shapes are worn. The nose ring is considered as a symbol of marriage.

Toe Rings are small rings worn on the toes. Wearing toe rings is a custom among some Hindu communities. It is usually made of silver. During the wedding ceremony the bridegroom put the toe ring on the brides toes.In North India toe rings are as important as a 'thali' (symbol of marriage).

In Eastern india, specially in West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, Red and White Bangles (Made of Pola and Shank) are worn by married women besides sporting Sindoor, as a mark of married woman.-

What if she's a muslim? Can she wear a burqua? What if she's a satanist? That's a valid religion. Should she be able to wear satanic symbols?

What applies to one religion applies to all. It's easy to assume you mean a chain with a cross, but what if it's a chain with a goat's head with horns? You could make the argument that as long as it is not visible, it can be worn under the clothing - but unless the same rules apply to a Satanist and a Christian and a Muslim, then the door is wide open to lawsuits and trouble.

I need some information about how Egyptian jewellery was religious, and what it protected people from..

Jewellery was important in an everyday lifestyle for the Egyptians. It was used for religious reasons, but also fashionable reasons. They created jewellery with natural and beautiful gems, beads, shells, plant branches, stones, and even bones. These were designed in threads of flax or even cow hair. People sometimes painted it with glass substances to give it shine and clarity. Both men and women wore jewellery, rich or poor. Men wore simple symbolic jewellery, while women wore much larger, colourful, and decorated jewellery. As Societies and technology developed in time, people started using gold, and silver to create a more complex rang of jewellery.
Jewellery was used as religious beliefs because jewellery would protect people from evil beyond the Nile, from spirits, enemies, and also danger. People used different ways to express the message of the jewellery. Some were cartouches (hieroglyphics), most were symbolized as ankh, or even the eye of Ra.

okay , i am egyptian so i can tell u for sure that nowadays a man wearing jewelery is very provoking, and in islam men should not wear gold. another point, most people in egypt buy jew. and gold bec they think it is a way to invest and not out of spirituality. also hieroglyphics iin gold is only made for tourists we don't really buy it. however sometimes ( and mostly) women wear jewelry with islamic inscriputions and verses for quran bec they think it keeps the evil eye away!

I wear a small but solid gold cross that I bought from a craftsman's workshop in Cyprus, but I often wonder if it is too ostentatious (being gold, I mean).
sparklesntwind, I can't post a picture, but I'll try to describe it. It's a small chunk of 24Kt gold (2cm square) with the east-west arms shorter than the north-south. You can see the craftsman's tool marks in the raised centre section of it, but the edges are polished smooth. I was in Cyprus with my (then) girlfriend in 1999 and I wanted to buy a wooden cross because I found the churches so simple and beautiful, but she persuaded me to buy this one, and I've worn it ever since.

Personally, I don't have any jewelry or have any religious stuff in my house except my Bible.

I don't think Christianity has to be advertised by appearance. If someone can not tell that you are a Christian by the way you walk, talk, your attitude; and by being an example of what a Christian should be - then you have a problem.
