silver chain jewellery

Aside from the methods described in http://www.silverstall.com/silver%20pend ants.html does anyone know of an easy method to isolate the main body of the jewellery item when welding a silver link or pendant clasp onto it.

Hey there,
A friend bought me a white gold locket necklace recently, but unfortunately it didn't come with a chain - it's just the locket - so I can't wear it.
Does anybody know where I can buy a silver jewellery chain in the UK that isn't too expensive?

If you MUST do it yourself, be very gentle with the chains. Find the ends where the chain fastens (or broken ends) and work from one side, (the open side) -- slowly pushing the end through the loops it is tangled around.

You will need eyes like mine (naturally near-sighted) or a magnifying glass or reading glasses to see close up if you have very fine chains.

Be careful not to jerk the chains or pull too hard.

Get one out at a time if possible.

When you get to a pendant, of course you will need to work the chains around it in order to form the "escape loops" you will need.

You may need to experiment a little. For instance, take the chains out that have no pendants first.

You may find a safety pin handy to wiggle around in a tight knot in order to widen the chained knots (which you probably have if it's been in a tangle for awhile...). You will not break the chains if you are very careful.

Just stick the long pin side into the center of the knot and wiggle it. Hopefully, you will soon feel the chain loosen and can then use your fingers to make the circle wider.

I have gotten several knots out of chains this way before.

You will need lots of patience.

If this method works with the first chain, it will work with the rest. Each one will be easier. Sometimes a knot of jewelry looks worse than it really is.

I notice that two people have suggested a pawn shop or jewelry shop. I would say that they would probably charge you for this, but this choice might be right for you if it's too hard to do by the "end of chain" method I described.

Last but not least, store your chains safely apart from each other so they don't get tangled again. Even one chain can tangle with itself if it's thrown around or pushed together.
