I see lots of jewelry supply sites and sterling silver jewelry, but so far I can't find a supplier of plain sterling silver pieces.

I need to cut sheets of the silver to make jewelry...

www.firemountaingems.com would be my first choice, although i am unsure of the cut sheets of silver. i know they used to offer coils-like any wire.

Basic toothpaste and a very soft toothbrush, like one you would buy for a baby. This will work on any jewelery, sterling silver included.

I've noticed some stamped chain link sterling jewelry having a weak magnetism when held to a strong magnet (not the average fridge magnet but stronger) does get attracted -- why is this? is the the tiny amount of non-silver metals in sterling doing this? is the .075 nickel or iron?

Nickel is magnetic in nature, so it would seem that you have reasoned out your answer. I have never noticed this with my sterling jewelry, but I haven't tested it either. How odd...will have to try!

I have some sterling silver jewelry that is starting to darken and am just wondering if there is a way to clean the jewelry just using regular household goods.

The first step would be to try soaking it in warm water with a couple of drops of mild detergent. Then scrub it with an old toothbrush, rinse under clean water and leave it to dry on a paper towel.

If this isn't sufficient, and the jewellery does not contain gemstones or pearls, you can place it in a container lined with aluminium foil, sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda and pour in hot water. Soak for half an hour and then clean with a toothbrush as above.
