unique pendant necklace

I want a UNIQUE necklace. The first thing that jumped into my head was a star/starfish or a (more unique) elephant pendant. Which do you think would be best?

I'm male and gay and want to buy my partner something special for his birthday coming up in October. Still have some time to look around and collect some ideas.
He likes jewelry, but most jewelry is boring and I don't want the stereotypical gay jewelry which is full of rainbows etc. (Think thats a little tacky).
So I'm looking for something in men's jewellery that is a little more special and unique with a designer touch. Dog tags/military bear style are nice and that sort of style but would like something more personalized (engraved or jazzed up). and not so cheap looking as a plain military dog tag.
I don't want a ring because I don't want him to replace his commitment ring! So it must be a nice arty necklace or a pendant.
Sorry if I sound a little picky but those of you how are gay know exactly how difficult it is to find something cool and those who aren't know that gay men are a little more fashion conscious!

I was in Albuquerque, New Mexico last Feb. and fell in love with one of the neckalces on these giant bill boards posted around the city. It was around Valentine's day, so they were everywhere. The store had sold out of the necklace I wanted, but said they'd be getting more in and gave me a card. I lost the card. Go figure. I need to know the name of the store, and if they still have those necklaces. To the best of my memory, there was a gold chain with a neat heart pendant.

Try "Mati" - That's the first one that pops to mind when you say billboard. They make custom jewelry, they are usually larger pieces using more obscure stones.

I'm trying to think of who else advertises jewelry on the billboards - Gertrude Zachary maybe... or Silverman's -
